Earlier in the year Anime Limited announced they acquired the rights to theatrically release Masaaki Yuasa’s two latest films for the United Kingdom. Today their UK premiere dates have been announced!
With the nationwide theatrical dates getting close the two films will also have special UK premiere screenings on various festivals beforehand!
Starting off with Night is Short, Walk on Girl as Anime Limited have announced the film will receive its premiere over at Glasgow Film Theatre on Saturday 9th September at 17:30 (5:30pm). Tickets are available over on the theatre’s main website. If you can’t reach the premiere the film will also be given a special release a few days later at Picturehouse Central in Stratford, London on Monday 11th September. In addition both premiere dates will also feature a special Q&A session with the director Masaaki Yuasa. If you can’t reach both of these dates the nationwide release across select cinemas will be on 4th October 2017. The film will be presented in Japanese audio with English subtitles only.
Gracefully yet violently, The Girl with Black Hair (Kana Hanazawa) swirls through the abstract Kyoto night a joyful tempest. Blowing through pub crawls, festivals and book fairs, her youthful glee infects parties of increasingly eccentric characters, but amongst the debtors, existentialists and the God of the Old Book Market, can she be convinced “coincidental” encounters are fate and will she notice the Senpai (Gen Hoshino) in pursuit of her love?
Whether the hands on your clock move fast or slow, Night is Short, Walk On Girl.
Later in the year we have Lu Over the Wall also providing a UK premiere over at the BFI London Film Festival, competing against other films for the annual award. The film will be available on two different dates; Saturday 14 October at 12:45 (12:45pm) over in BFI Southbank, NFT2; and also Sunday 15 October at 18:10 (6:10pm) over in Prince Charles Cinema, Downstairs Screen. Tickets for both screenings will be available on 14th September at 10:00am. If you can’t reach both of these dates the nationwide release across select cinemas will be on 8th December 2017. The film will be presented in Japanese audio with English subtitles only.
Winner of the top prize at this year’s Annecy Animation Film Festival, Lu Over the Wall brings humans and merfolk together with surprising outcomes. Kai lives in a small fishing town with his superstitious grandfather. The old man warns him of the dangers of the merfolk, who he believes will cause them harm. When confronted by bullies, Kai is helped by Lu, a fun-loving mermaid who loves music but is vulnerable to sunlight. With a local seafood company posing a threat to the town and a number of its inhabitants hostile towards the mer people, Lu, Kai and his friends must club together to ensure both communities survive. This funky, upbeat tale is full of energy and features cute merdogs, musical mermaids and a giant humanoid shark. Despite the inevitable comparison with Ghibli’s Ponyo, Lu Over the Wall has its own unique style and features a really cool soundtrack.
