While news of a UK dub of The Borrowers Arrietty has been known for a while, the trailer has only recently been released. The cast looks good with Saoirse Ronan, Mark Strong, Olivia Colman stepping up for voice acting duties.

Based on Mary Norton’s classic 1952 book, The Borrowers, the film follows a boy named Sho, who moves into his great aunt’s house in the Tokyo suburbs where a 14-year-old Borrower named Arrietty and her family live under the floorboards. Arrietty tries her best to prove her worth by helping her father “borrow” much-needed items from their human landlords but Sho discovers their existence. A relationship develops between Sho and Arrietty even though it puts the lives of the Borrowers’ in danger and they must work together to protect the existence of the Borrowers.

Originally released in Japan in July 2010, Studio Ghibli’s Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Borrowers Arrietty) is being handled by Optimum Releasing and will go into official UK exhibition on the 29th of July.

Is it really pronounced Studio 'Jibbly'? Wow. Either they got it waaay wrong, or I've been reading it wrong all my life.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Admittedly, I champion the cause of British dubs but that was weird. Weeeeeird. I will need to watch it a couple of times to get used to it. I think Arietty and lead boy's voices are perfect, but the narrator sounded a bit weird. What accent was that even?

Lol. Wow. British dub. I'll be in the UK first week of August. If I can, I'll pop over to Norwhich and see if it's being shown anywhere there. I must support this!

Is that annoying narrator voice actually going to be in the film though? I assumed it was just for the trailer.

The rest of the voices sound good though.

Yep, it is 'jibbly' - It is from Italian IIRC which explains the spelling.

I got it wrong for a while when I first heard it as well :p

Interesting question about the narrator. I haven't read the book so I can't tell. Could anyone who has read the book tell us what to expect?
