The new volume of Fruits Basket

I was wondering if any other Furuba fans have read the latest volume - number 16. Just finished it today and my thought are as follows:

I found the first part of the book heart-breakingly sad where Kyo tells the story about how he met Tohru's mum when he was little. But I like the way that part of the story ends on a surprisingly hopeful note - about how everyone loses their way once and how hard it can be to find answers on your own.

I dunno, its been a while since I read any Furuba and those words just reminded me why I love this series so much! Always makes me feel hopeful. I was wondering if anyone knows of a series this good, please let me know. It seems to exist in a class of its own.

Back to the story... I did like Yuki's story towards the end. I can finally see how much he's changed - can't believe what he said to Akito! If that was me, I'd go run and hide. (Akito's scary!) Yuki you are so brave!

Especially liked the scene where Hatori tells Yuki "Don't be like your brother." Poor Aya...

And Momiji, how can I end this post without mentioning him. He pulls a very cheeky stunt near the end. Nice to see the kids being kids.

What are your thoughts?

Wow.

I haven't read it *yet* but I've seen the anime. None of this is mentioned on it. Then again the manga includes more, anyway.
Yuki is brave towards Akito, since Akito used to... well bully him, when he was younger. It's so sad about Momiji's mum not knowing who he is, but he sees her everyday. Yeah, I think this is in the other series, but I'm just telling you about some of the characters. Anyway this is really interesting, thanks for letting us know.

Urrkk T_T You're so lucky!
I ordered mine and it's still not come ¬_¬
I'm itching to read it!

This volume...my god, I don't think I've cried that much reading any of the other volumes, which is saying something. I think it was maybe halfway through the story of Tohru's parents, thinking it was sweet, and then it hit me that these people who I was so intently reading the love story of were actually dead and that they were so hopeful at this point, but that it wouldn't last for long. Gah, horrible. Actually freaked out my boyfriend, I was blubbering so bad ^^#

But, yes, absolutely brilliant volume, as always. I think people so often, especially those that have just seen Fruits Baskets from the outside, don't realise that behind the pastel shoujo facade, it is a really mature, adult and often frightening story. Thank god we have characters like Tohru and Momiji that keep us hopeful that all the dark elements will be resolved for the better by the time the final volume concludes.

*runs off to read more scanlations of vol. 17 as August is too far off*

This was a great volume... but I don't know. It does seem to be getting a bit over-coincidental and over-melodramatic. As wonderful as the Kyo / Kyoko story was, it's not ever explained where, when, how or why they met, and why Kyo has decided to keep quiet about it for so long...

On another note, one thing I'm really quite enjoying (and it's a lot less heavy handed than other aspects of the series) is how Yuki is developing a friendship with Kakeru (see 140-142 where they're teasing each other. I had to double take to realise that second happy person was Yuki!) and also how he's coming to be interested in Machi. Which is a great outcome, because Kyo x Tohru is where it's at :p
