Star Wars videogames

So I recently fell in love with all things Star Wars after buying and watching both trilogies (I think I preferred the prequel trilogy :x) and so I decided to check out some Star Wars videogames. I bought Star Wars: Best of PC (Knights of the Old Republic, Empire at War, Battlefront, Jedi Knight II, Republic Commando and a 14-day trial of Galaxies) the other day from eBay and it just came in the post this morning. So I'm wondering what opinions y'all have on Star Wars videogames? As I understand, KOTOR is extraordinarily popular so I'm really looking forward to playing that but first of all I'll be installing Empire At War because I absolutely adored the demo. So, favourite Star Wars videogames? Least favourite SW videogame? Discuss!

KOTOR is OK from what I played it when I was around 13 or so, it was fun but, the story was good, but the battle system and everything else? Eh, typical BioWare fluff.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is probably the best Star Wars game I can remember playing in all my life.

I also own the Star Wars: Empire Strikes back SNES game, but it was fairly difficult and I can't remember much of it.

EDIT: I got the Force Unleashed new for free, it was an average game, story was pretty much "How the rebel alliance was formed"

Oh and...

That little issue aside (I have to say I prefer the expanded universe of the games, novels and comics to any of the films) the KotOR games are probably the best Star Wars games ever produced, as long as you enjoy RPGs. Very immersive and pretty massive too. Jedi Knight & JKII are very good third-person action games (the first is very dated in both graphics and gameplay now though) the third, Jedi Academy, less so. The customisable character option was nice, but it also means the protagonist of the first two games is out of the picture. I couldn't believe how short it was either. The others never really stood out to me, and you can have too many Star Wars games (hint hint, Lucasarts).

I used to play them alot when i was younger!

The ones i've played are the following:

Knights Of The Old Republic + II
Galatic Battlegrounds + Clones Wars
Battlefront + II
Empire At War + Expansion
Jedi Knight - Dark Forces II
Rebellion (Supremacy in the UK)
Jedi Outcast
Jedi Academy
Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace
Rebel Assault
Roque Squadron
X-Wing
X-Wing vs Tie Fighter + Balance of Power expansion
X-Wing Alliance

Out of that list, i would rate both KOTOR's, Jedi Outcast and X-Wing Alliance as the best of the lot. In fact, i wish they would make another X-Wing game

I literally spent the entire day playing Empire At War (obviously playing through the Empire's campaign first of all). I'm really, really enjoying it. I used to love RTS games (I grew up on Command & Conquer!) and it's nice getting back into RTS gameplay again :] I really appreciate the micromanaging of the empire and the short story sequences. Also, getting to play around with Darth Vader is just always going to be cool!

Haha, I have to say I really don't understand the massive hate directed at the prequel movies by SW fans. Any of the problems with the prequels are absolutely right there in the originals too :p

Yeah, the expanded universe for Star Wars is really quite massive it seems. The Star Wars wiki, Wookiepedia (which I spend hours on end looking through ever since I fell in love with the franchise!), has like over 70,000 pages so there's obviously a lot to talk about.

BioWare are a very well respected, successful, critically acclaimed games studio. What do you mean to describe their work as "typical fluff"? Sounds a bit pretentious to me, which I am of course shocked to hear from you :p

Eh, what? There are no more plotholes in the prequels than there are in the original trilogy, as far as I could tell.

Well, all of BioWare's games are the same pretty much, in terms of role-playing system, they never really change it or add anything to it. I mean, there's nothing really -bad- with it, but I'm trying to do a second play through on Mass Effect and I just can't do it, lack of variety, really. If KOTOR is your first you will probably enjoy it.

As for the plot holes statement, I can't really remember any in the originals, but there may have been some, but I remember watching it and Leia telling Luke (In RotJ) that their mother was beautiful and very troubled person, as she was born first, but to remember that she'd need to be like... what, five? Then in Revenge of the Sith both of them are born are shipped off without much of a glimpse at their mother. There's probably worse ones, but that's the best I could catch.

I prefer the old movies, the new ones are pretty good, but they really should have got another actor for Anakin, the guy who plays him is pretty bad. I like the Clone Wars as a time-period in the fictional universe too, was a good concept.

Oh and pretentious is the new big word to throw around in gaming media, be careful with it!

Okay, my twopenn' orth on the films while we're at it:

The main problem with the prequels is the goddamn script. (that and the massive over-reliance on CGI. And the bad acting. And J*r J*r. And Darth Vader's "DO NOT WANT" at the end. But mainly the script.) George Lucas can't write for **** - See Reason 22 (that whole site is worth reading). He's not even that great a director. The best film in the series, Empire, was written and directed by other people based on Lucas' story. That's always the best thing to happen with Star Wars "Thanks for the rough idea George, we'll take it from here..." hence my preference for EU materials.

People might hate on Episodes I-III a little too much (I think we actually enjoy going over the top now because people get a laugh out of it - look at the site above and that episode of Spaced) but in all honesty prequels are just generally **** anyway, because not only do we know how it ends, but as many characters as possible are always shoehorned in to the detriment of the overall story when viewed as one. In this way bad prequels even work to bring the original works down. More original characters and less miserable attempts at fanservice would have improved them several fold.

I'm not a huge Star Wars fan in the slightest, however, I enjoyed Empire At War quite a lot when I got it. The campaign was terrific and because it was apart of Star Wars, it had a lot of stuff to work with. I didn't complete it, because, IIRC, I got stuck on a level and was too lazy to try harder on it.

I'm also pretty fond of The Force Unleashed. It's essentially a sci-fi Devil May Cry, but with better voice acting and story. If I had to choose between them, I'd probably choose The Force Unleashed. I have a couple of gripes with DMC. I recommend checking that out next time you steal that PS3 of your neighbour.

I've completed the Empire's campaign in Empire At War (it was pretty cool, but a little dull and samey after a while; so I'm going to leave it for a while before playing the Rebel campaign and then getting the Forces of Corruption expansion). Also completed Republic Commando which I enjoyed but the pacing was a little off, the weapons were kind of lame (I just stabbed most of the enemies with the melee blade as that was stronger that the majority of the guns, and I would have liked more story but it's still a cool game). And today I played the first 4 or so hours of KOTOR and I absolutely love it. There's a lot of story, tonnes of characters and I really like the open-ended-ness of it all (I always thought the Sith were cooler than the Jedi but I really can't be mean to all of the people on Taris so I guess I'm going to be using the light side of the force).

In all, I'm rather enjoying my experience with the world of Star Wars videogames :]

Well, if that's the best you can do, then I really think you're being disingenuous by saying the 6 movies have plot holes. Leia just said she wasn't really sure but that she remembers her mother being very beautiful. She could be just remembering her first few sights from when she was born. It's not a big deal at all.

It's the best I could do because I haven't been "into" Star Wars since I was like 12, sorry I'm not getting into it now.

Hmm. Did you guys who played Jedi Academy play JKII? Because I thought that was by far the best of the Jedi Knight games. I was quite disappointed with JK:JA.

First time I played KotOR I did it honestly, acting how I would act in those situations. Second time - I was utterly corrupt. That does make for some hilarious exchanges, especially with your 'good' party members. When playing it through that way I really did come to hate some of them for their whiny, preachy attitudes. It's almost as if I myself was corrupted by my character...

I'm liking all the positive talk about JK II because that was one of the games that came with my "Best of PC" collection :] I also got Battlefront, any opinions on that?

KotOR is really impressing me an awful lot. How many hours did it take you guys to complete it?

Eh, you were the one that brought it up :s
