Show of the season (from The News Thread)

Gotta wonder whether it's actually going to last all 13 episodes, or whether some of them will get delayed indefinitely like Blood Blockade Battlefront.

Weirdly, a lot of people declared it the show of the season based on the first episode. (I'm assuming they were Fate/ufotable fanboys.) Wonder where they are now?

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

I bet it's also down to the unique shading that takes a while to draw in every single frame.

I have no idea and I didn't see anyone say it was show of the season. I really like ufotable although I think they should do more movies tbh.

It was a bunch of people on ANN, that seemed to like it a little bit too much. It came across as though they'd decided to like it, because ufotable produced it, rather than actually liking it...

Now the "show of the season" seems to be either Charlotte or Shimoneta. The later of which sounds disgusting.

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

The first 5 episodes are great, 6 and 7 are brilliant (I think 6 is a contender for best episode of the year), then at episode 9 it tanked hard and didn't recover for it's 10th...

I've really enjoyed God Eater despite the Delays but oddly enough I'd say my show of the season has been Gatchaman Crowds Insight though it's been hard to choose just one this season.

I've been enjoying it, but it's not show of the season.

I hated Gatchaman Crowds with a passion and quit after the first episode, for obvious reasons I didn't try Insight...

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

I'd say my show of the season will most likely be Non Non Biyori Repeat, although maybe that's cheating. To be fair, it's taken a controversial way of doing things (filling in gaps rather than progressing time) and done quite a lot with it. Depending on how the next three episodes go, it might even manage to be better than the first season (it'll probably end up close, at least).

There's a lot I haven't watched yet this season so I guess it's possible there might be something I'd like more. It'd be pretty impressive if there was, given how much I like Non Non Biyori Repeat. I have heard good things about Snow White with the Red Hair, which does sound like it could be the sort of show I'd enjoy. There are at least a few shows I'd quite like to see at some point, it doesn't seem like it turned out to be too bad a season.

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Non Non Biyori has probably been the most consistent / best looking show for me this season. While I get more excited about Rokka and Charlotte each week, I've found them both to be pretty inconsistent in quality, going from excellent to pretty average in the space of a few episodes, and then back again.

Prison School I was really, really enjoying, but I think I might wait for that to come out uncensored on the discs before going through it again, to get the full effect of the show.

What did you think about the 'twist' in Charlotte? Because that basically killed my growing enthusiasm for Charlotte stone dead.

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

I absolutely loved Gatchaman Crowds, but have been really disappointed by Gatchaman Crowds insight. If I wanted shallow dips into politics and elections, I'd watch the Labour Leadership Election coverage. The series definitely could have used some trimming, because it's taken far too long to get where it is now.
At the very least, Charlotte probably has the best opening theme of the season, but it's just a shame that the series can be so hit-or-miss depending on the episode. It also needs to try and drop those running gags it tried to set up that were never funny (you know the ones I mean).

Overall, I think this anime season has been considerably weaker than recent ones; with the shows I'm enjoying the most being continuations of the previous season (Food Wars and Durarara!! X2). I must admit that I've been enjoying Shimoneta though. Monster Musume had potential but the censorship seen in television anime doesn't really work well with MonMusu.

Remember how Issei's English VA didn't return for the Broadcast dub for High School DxD BorN because he retired from voice acting overall?

Well now he's convicted for a couple years over possession of child porn.

Funimation also terminated his contract back in May 2015 as a result of these charges.

Bloody hell.

The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

I enjoyed the twist in Charlotte briefly, on a superficial level, but my problem with it - which became more evident in the most recent episode - was that it just felt really lazy and unoriginal. It's been done to death in so many other shows, not least Madoka and Steins Gate. It frustrated me more because it took the show off in another direction precisely at a point where I thought it was getting into some really interesting stuff between the main guy and Nao in terms of their relationship and her 'saving' him after he went off the rails. I agree totally about Charlotte having the best OP of the season though.

Gatchaman Crowds is still entertaining, but I think the first season was much better - this one has some super interesting political/societal issues at its core, but I'm not convinced it's been able to build everything else around them in a convincing way. It's like someone shoving a fantastic essay in your face and then making a load of noise while you try and read through it.

Food Wars continues to be excellent, even if it is predictable Shonen tropes to its very core. It just does it with such passion and joy it's hard not to get swept up in the fun of it all. The music is excellent too.

Durarara is miles better than the first part of the second season (ie. it actually looks decent now) - but the problem I have with the show is it feels like you need a Wiki by your side while you're watching it to keep tabs of who everyone is/what's been going on. It's strange too, as I never really found that an issue with the original series.

Monster Musume has been great fun, but I'd argue it's far superior in the manga format - I just find the character designs much sharper and livelier there, and the jokes have more space to breath. Also, for me, the censorship is kind of a killer - even though they've done it well - because the whole point of that show is basically 'tits and bits'.

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

The Second Arc of Durarara!!x2 has been disappointing to me. The first 4 episodes are boring, none of the new characters are interesting in any way (except Akane and Aoba, who's appeared for all of maybe 2 minutes). Also, the series has become deadly serious and lost the sense of dark humour and fun that was underlying the first season.

Re: The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Show of the season for me is easily Gakkou Gurashi. Every episode is just excellent and I haven't been disappointed by it yet. I'm probably a little bias as I have a great love for both Cute Girls doing Cute Things and Zombie related things but it's been a long time since a show has been able to affect me on an emotional level like Gakkou Gurashi has. I haven't finished it yet and I'm actually 2 episodes behind due to internet loss but the way it's going it's very possible I might give it a 10. I think I'd have to watch it again from start to finish before I decide that but it's currently the only show this season that's a solid 9/10 so far. I'm also really considering importing the Japanese blu rays when they start coming out if by some slim chance they have English subs.

I'm trying to decide if I should just wait until Gakkou Gurashi has finished to catch up or if I should try to get caught up before the end. The longer I wait the harder it'll be to avoid spoilers and I get the feeling it might be worth seeing the end as soon as it's available.

Although I wouldn't rate it as highly as Non Non Biyori and it started last season, My Love Story/Ore Monogatari has been really fun to watch and the second season has had some great moments so far. I think it stands out because it does things a bit differently to the "standard" shoujo anime. There's the obvious part with the main character being a big guy that doesn't look like the usual shoujo love interest but it's also surprisingly clever and it's stories have a certain realism.

As far as this season rokka is a real stand out for me. It started off so stupid but now it's one of the most interesting mysteries I have ever seen in anime. Charlotte is kinda stupid. God eater is meh. Gangsta is cool although the meloncholic character development is way better than the action. Akagami looks beautiful and the story is actually really nice.

I'm really interested to see where Rokka will go in the second cour next season - it's spent so long on the 'who is the seventh Brave' thing now, you've got to wonder what's in store following that? Will it just return to standard fantasy 'going to kill the demon overlord' stuff afterward, or continue to subvert?
