Romance Based Anime Suggestions

I'm not really in the know when it comes to Romance based anime. My main viewing consists of action, horror and recently Gundam. I have however seen and enjoyed Romantic anime in the past. I wouldn't mind watching more and also, the misses is more likely to join me in the anime watching if it doesn't consist of someones head exploding.

Anime I have seen in past with similar themes are "Ah! My Goodess", "Love Hina", "Chobits" and a few others, but you get the idea. I'm not just looking for suggestions for a comedy of supernatural anime. I'll be quite happy to watch a Slice of life or seriouse drama also. I'm just after your ideas and opinions.

Ok! I'm all ears ^__^

Hurrah another precious topic that isn't the flame war thread or the exclusive social club thread...let's see.

From the Slice of Life thread currently ongoing, I'd suggest Maison Ikkoku (again) and Rumbling Hearts. The latter is more of a drama but is based around romance and despite being based on a pornographic bishoujo game, it seems to have more appeal to females than the usual "harem comedy with a hint of romance" shounen tropes. Maison Ikkoku is a long running romance with more realistic roots than 99% of its rivals. Some silly things happen but the core romantic plot is never forgotten.

Video Girl Ai was nice, and unusual, with some romance.

Escaflowne is another with more appeal to both genders in the romance department. Though some parts of that aspect of the show annoyed me personally.

Urusei Yatsura is a comedy with themes of romance. I'm just recommending it because I'm a Takahashi fiend...

 I like your style skikes.

Thanks for the tips Rui. Been reading up on some of your suggestions. I've seen Escaflowne thanks to the short lived channel formaly known as Anime Central. Good anime.
Hah! Rui, you really are a Takahashi fiend! Your not the only one I know of either. Have added these to my list now and liking what I see.
Video Girl Ai looks like it'll be different too. With so few episodes as well, looks like it'll be an easy watch. Cheers ^^

You should try Anime with action and a romance plot. Nadesico for instance, one of my favourites.

Try the DearS manga aswell but avoid the Anime. It's ruuuubish.

OH, hadn't realised Nadesico had a romance theme? :? I guess that must be on e of the side stories is it? Not that I've seen "Alien Succesor like". I do like a bit of supernatural/ actaion in my romace mind.
My misses would prefer it to be more believable like.

You can see the tension between 3 of the characters all the way through, but obviously it's not the main theme. For someone who likes action I thought it might be more suitable & with a recent taking to Gundam you might appreciate the mechs.

If you can handle low-budget series, His and Her Circumstances. If not, look up the manga (Kare Kano).

The story has no supernatural elements and, although it does have comedy thrown in, the romance high school develops in a mature fashion. The male and female leads are characters pretty much everyone can relate to in some way since both put on fronts when around others, masking their true selves.

Thanks for the thought and the anime has been duelly noted CV (Castlevania). I do love my action. The reason for this thread is so I can get into a new genre. Plus, my misses won't watch any anime which makes life hard for me being a big fan of it.

I end up waiting till she goes to bed then watching it till the early hours to get my fix. I don't mind like, but it would be even better if I could get her into at least one.

@Aion: Nice! That's what I'm talking about. Looks like it has quite a good following too. His and Her Circumstances has been mentioned in the past but I took no notice. It's now been added to my list. Ta Aion.

5cm per second.

Great art. Great story. Great characters.

It's very hard to explain what it's about, but there is only 3 episodes - So it is definietly worth a watch! ;D

Some things you might not think of but might fall into what you want. School Rumble and Karin.

If you don't mind some yuri action look up, Kashimashi Girl Meets Girl, or Otoboku Maidens Are Falling For Me.

Any of Makoto Shinkai's anime are a holy grail in term of 'realistic long distance romance', especially 5cm per second. I'm still annoyed that it isn't released in England and that it's stop being produced in America. So yeah... try find a cheap R1 copy =P Or find a fansub around the net (trust me, I can't find 2 or 3 anywhere and I'm willing to buy an R1, but its so expensive on Amazon)

RomeoxJuliet looks like a contendor.

Also... For the manga. Bitter Virgin. That is seriously the best manga I read and its the best for romance imo.

This! All Shinkai's work are awesome.

Nice! Cheers for the suggestions. I already have a pile lined up to watch. Think this list is gonna last me some time now, so thanks for the posts peops. :thumb:

Watcootalkinbout'. DearS is one of the funniest Anime I have ever seen... I really fail to see why everyone hates it so much...

I think it's because most people have already seen it when it was called Chobits (though that was pretty derivative itself!).

I liked the DearS anime too. It wasn't very romantic by my standards but it was entertaining. Loved the teacher...
