JLC Turning Japanese, Channel 5 Tonight 2100, 27/Jan

Thousand Master
2100, a 3 part series with comedian Justin Lee Collins explores Japanese culture, beginning with love and relationships. Tonight in Tokyo he attends a dating class, investigates "love dolls", and spends an evening as an escort.

This could be either good, or skin crawlingly OMFG bad.

Well, I managed to catch it at 9:15, so I missed the part discussing the 2 sexes being uncomfortable with each other (and their falling birth rate).

It was one of those "I know it was going on, but I haven't experience it" insights to me. Justin didn't like a fair few things with the love dolls and male hosts.
I found it interesting, and I may watch the next part - although Japanese stand-up seems a little wierd. lol

Somebody needs to tell 'em it's the same everywhere!

I saw this as well. Seemed to me like a cross between the sort of show Jonathan Ross has presented in the past and An Idiot Abroad - the show covered the usual stuff like male host clubs, sex dolls and lessons for people to interact with the opposite sex better. After experiencing each of them Justin would then make a few comments.

I agree it's very similar to Japanorama that Ross did for the beeb, though that focused mostly on anime and manga otaku-ism, this seems to dig into the more seedier aspects of Japanese culture. Even the opening music sounded similar to Japanorama. I wonder who did the research and where they got it from? He stated at the beginning that he was basically "that idiot abroad for the first time" and that he wanted to discover what Japan was all about beyond the usual clichés and manga, of which he declared he hated. So he discovered a small business run out of one guy's apartment selling basically women's underwear to "stressed out men" to wear, and we're suppose to be convinced it's commonly accepted there like an Ann Summer's for men.

Now the love dolls piece was a bit of a creepy, but yet surprisingly interesting report. I couldn't believe how absolutely real they looked. But I was equally relieved to see none of them looked like an anime, or manga character, though I'm sure they do exist as well. Even the Japanese woman interpreter couldn't believe her ears when the "company exec" said he preferred sex with the dolls than with a real woman. At least in that aspect it's good in a way that they are steering away from anything anime, and manga related.

Am I the only one thinking "Because dolls can't say no?"

that's almost as bad as "it's not rape, it's surprise sex" XD

Isn't that only because Justin collins as he mentioned at the start of the show, doesn't like manga or robots. :(

At least he's aware of what manga is though, which is a change.
Actually, when he said he didn't like manga I took it to mean he doesn't like anime.

It doesn't make him any less of a boring ****.

No, it's "it's not rape once they learn to enjoy it".

edit: awesome, I really wanted to start a new page (in default view, anyway) with that.
