Dreamworks Approach Scarlett Johansson For Ghost In The Shell

Earlier this year, it was reported that Dreamworks were eyeing&nbsp;<em>The Wolf of Wall Street</em>'s Margot Robbie for the possible lead role in their upcoming live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow's&nbsp;<em>Ghost in the Shell</em>&nbsp;manga. However, according to Deadline, those talks didn't end as positively as DreamWorks had hoped. So instead, apparently DreamWorks have shifted their attention to one of the biggest women in cinema at the moment.

Ever since she appeared in&nbsp;Marvel Studios'&nbsp;<em>Iron Man 2</em>&nbsp;as the super spy Natasha "Black Widow" Romanoff, Scarlett Johansson has become a househould name and apparently, DreamWorks are looking for her to appear as the movie's lead character, who is most likely&nbsp;their version of Major Motoko Kusanagi, as they have offered her the role for $10 Million.&nbsp;

What do you think of the idea of Scarlett Johansson as The Major?

DreamWork's&nbsp;<em>Ghost in the Shell</em>&nbsp;is currently set to be directed by Rupert Sanders (<em>Snow White and the Huntsman</em>), with a script written by William Wheeler (<em>The Hoax</em>,&nbsp;<em>The Reluctant Fundamentalist</em>).

I do wonder if The Major might be seen as being too similar to Black Widow. However, if Scarlett Johansson does get on board, that would bring a lot of star power to the movie.

I'd see this as an encouraging thing, as probably one of the main reasons her name is being talked about. I reckon she'd be a lot better than others.

But yeah, as with all the other rumours re. this - I'll believe it when I see it.

Nope.

Scarlett Johansson is one of those actresses who has surprised me a lot with her ability to pull off some very tricky roles to get right. She's great as Black Widow in the Marvel Studios movies.

But for Motoko Kusanagi? Completely wrong.

If Hollywood is dead set on attempting this, how about they go outside of their list of 12 actresses that they offer everything to by default and look for somebody who stands half a chance of doing the role justice?

The fact that it's Dreamworks doing this makes this look like a tin of Pedegree Chum waiting to be opened.

You would think people would be happy that a A rank star was interested in doing a project like this, not complaining about it.

I'm just resigned to the fact that it's going to be awful, like anything Hollywood ever adapts from a foreign or animated source. The idea of a white Motoko (played by an actress I don't personally find that appealing) who will probably end up being called something like "Major Mary Cosgrove" is just the dog turd not being quite finished, and another bit of turd piling on top.

I have a pretty concrete idea of what a live action Motoko would look like, and Scarlett Johansson it is not.

Major Mary Cosgrove-Hall would be my preference.

By that logic, though, people would have been thrilled with the prospect of Leonardo DiCaprio and Morgan Freeman in That Other Movie That Shall Not Be Named And Will Never Be Made.

Nobody on this board would welcome a faithful Hollywood adaptation of GITS more than me. The likelihood of us getting that seems very low, unfortunately.

I imagine a fat paycheque and a starring role in a potentially lucrative franchise would interest any jobbing actor, regardless of status.

I like hearing other fans' ideas about these things. I don't necessarily agree all the time, but there are some cool ideas that surface from time to time..

Keanu for Ishikawa? Interesting. Not who I'd go to for the role, but I reckon he could do it!

Oddly enough, a pal visited tonight and wanted to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier. After watching, we agreed that Johansson is COMPLETELY wrong for the role of Motoko (Or Major Melody McBazookadeath, or whatever they sacriligiously rename her) BUT... Cobie Smulders might just be perfect!

There's a scene in The Winter Soldier where she casually offs two bad guys who burst into the room she's making a clandestine transmission from. In that moment, she's so steely and all-business that she completely convinces as a hard-ass, detached authority figure.

Pop a purple hair-do on her, give her an assault rifle and the GITS:SAC 2nd Gig uniform, and she'd be my Motoko of choice. No reservations.
