Defective or Disappointing UK Anime Discs

I do think a reason why Justin is on that pedestal is yeah due to his openness with the fans like he didn’t have to reveal he’s doing EVA this early and yet he did.
He's put on a pedestal because outside of those few titles that went wrong, he has built up a reputation of being pretty much the only consistently good US aniBD encoder throughout the years. If you look at the other distributors over the last decade, it's all ups and downs, generally starting way down. You generally know what you're going to get compared to say, a Funimation or Viz release - and even now both of those put out releases that are all over the place e.g. Funi's Kobayashi, Dumbbells and Mob S2 BDs are good, yet the Quints and Shield Hero BDs aren't so hot. All the Jojo sets are good, yet OPM S2 and Inuyasha are bad/really bad. I can just shove in one of his discs and not have to worry about whether it'll look bad.

Yeah he is a key reason why discotek is now my top distributor. Also wouldn’t be surprised that whenever we get Maid Dragon S that won’t be as good as S1’s release still wonder why they went two BD 50s Route when it’s didn’t even get a CE as frees are varying by what I know.

FWIW almost every Funimation release nowadays is 2xBD50s with high 20/low 30mbps encodes.
It’s amazing what being owned by Sony can do for you.

I don't know why no anime label has used the services of David Mackenzie / Fidelity in Motion when he's widely regarded as being the best in the world and has been used by all the big boutique labels (Arrow, Second Sight, Eureka, Studio Canal, Indicator, BFI etc). He said to me once a number of years ago that he'd like to do anime.

If he's still interested, Violet Evergarden is friendly enough for him to tackle (especially as it's not a harem, ecchi, isekai stuff).

Jumping through a bunch of things before I clock out for the festive season! Definitely noted on feedback from folks (hello @Mangaranga especially!)

I think it's been covered by you but worth people keeping in mind that what was pointed out re QC is correct - comparisons to other versions of the work can be difficult as not always are we given the same materials as the JP homevideo masters. With that in mind though we're going to look over what else can be done going forwards to improve the QC process internally.

The final product matters a lot to us (hence pausing the release for VE) and we've worked hard over the last year to stablise the parts of the workflow we can control (COVID not withstanding) so appreciate the notes :).

Then why did anime_andrew made a clear distinction in the PR statement?

No matter how many times you proofread something, there's always an alternate reading you miss!

To confirm - we used a professional studio used to handling general film/TV series for Violet Evergarden's authoring and as observed by @Mangaranga - we've used them for quite a few projects and things have gone fine. When I refer to a specialist studio I mean one used to the quirks of Japanese animation or more specialist cinema projects. Some projects really require that where others don't and that's usually material dependent.

Your assumption about cost is also off the mark and to be clear we don't use them because they're cheaper than everyone else. Authoring as a whole is not cheap and by-the-by it tends to pool around a certain number. Any higher and you have to know what you're getting is worth it (aka a specialist) and any lower and there is a problem.

Side note but specialist jobs in our field are usually US based, which used to work out comparable-ish (bit higher but still do-able) pricing wise but as Brexit is tanking the value of the GBP generally that cost is now on the rise. That means it is harder than ever to go that route unless the project is of a certain scale, which you won't always know when the decision has to be made.

(Also re KAZE - not sure who reported that but this is a studio that didn't do anime until we started working with them from Amanchu - which is after KAZE stopped releasing titles direct in the UK market. Pretty sure as I recall they authored in-house, but it's been a while for me!)

Hope that all helps folks and again have a great festive season everyone! I'm looking forward to catching up in the New Year in due course :).

Merry Christmas and hopefully AL staff are safe and sound given the recent global events.

I look forward to owning many more AL sets in 2021. Of the 80 items I have acquired this year, just over half are AL related (and there's more incoming too).

As suspected, Funimation/Manga leaving off the HDR on their Akira 4K UHD was a mistake. Replacements will be available from February. Details about the replacement program here.
Do you think that it's possible for people outside of UK to do replacements as well? I'm from Sweden and I can't even open the funimation link because we don't have Funimation here :S

I haven't bought it yet, but I guess I won't buy it until they switch the discs.

Watched Demon City Shinjuku, this morning and oh lord, the subtitle timing is painful, I'd say it's like 50/50 in sync and not in sync, maybe tipped more towards not. A lot of lines come in somewhere from half a second to a full second early and end before the dialogue is actually finished. It starts to become noticeable with the scene in the dojo near the beginning of the movie and then the worst culprit is the scene when Kyoya first meets Mephisto, where the subtitles start and end far too early. Double checked on my PC just to make sure my BD player or TV wasn't acting up but the issue is still there. Don't recall this being an issue on Wicked City. I don't think any single scene is fully in sync as it comes and goes throughout.

I emailed Funimation last week, I'm in the Netherlands.
I just received a reply that they won't be able to offer the disc replacements outside the UK and Ireland due to licensing. They encouraged me to return the disc and ask for a refund.

That's good to know. I'm glad that I didn't buy it then 😅

I presume that's the UK release?
