BBFC pass Elfen Lied uncut

The first DVD volume (4 episodes) of Elfen Lied had recently been submitted to the BBFC by ADV UK and has now been passed uncut with a 15 certificate.

Some UK fans had feared that Elfen Lied, which features heavy amounts of "blood & gore", would be cut for its UK release but the fact that the BBFC have not even awarded it with an 18 certificate illustrates how times have changed.

This news is also favourable for an uncut Gantz release, which is due for its UK debut in September from MVM. Elfen Lied has yet to be given a UK release date by ADV but an autumn release looks likely.

Havinly only seen bits of Elfen Lied I'm not the perfect judge, but I'm not surprised it got a 15 certificate. There is indeed tons of extreme violence and gore, but it comes across as more like Itchy & Scratchy than anything seriously disturbing.

GANTZ will be another kettle of fish though. I've seen the first four uncut episodes and read a lot of the manga and it's pretty harsh, controversial stuff! I loved it and I'm 95% sure it won't be cut by the BBFC (they only seem to take a second look at sexual violence).

Well you have to remember that the violence in Elfen Lied was done in such a way to look unrealistic, bright red blood gushing out at high pressure isnt realistic in any way. The later volumes may have a higher rating because of the experimentation in the flashbacks and the bit with the puppy and naked kids

I watched it with a friend and we spend the whole first 5 eps rolling around laughing, easily one of the funniest shows ive ever seen

I watched the first 3 volumes of Gantz today, it's certainly gorey but lacked alot of the manga's 'ewww' factor, not as gratuitous as the manga but still very graphic. I doubt this will be an 18 cert (first 2 vols at least) it's certainly no more graphic than the 15 cert live action movie 'Cabin Fever' which if I remember rightly had a lot of grue. I'm sure when the sexual scenes emerge the cert will jump to an eighteen but on the whole and regarding the fact it's animated I can't see this getting more than a 15.

i too hope that Gantz is uncut, cos i loved the show.
hopefully like 'PAUL' mentioned Tiiiiiiime ago, that the UK version of Gantz may have more eps than the crappy 2 per disc R1 version, due to some links with Madman Ent. or something like that.

i just hope !

Your wish will come true. MVM are lisencing it, not ADV, and they will use the Madman DVD masters rather than the ADV one, so it's 7 DVDs for the two seasons together, so five four-ep discs and two three-eps.

I'm suprised Elfen Lied got a 15, it's easily the most violent anime i've ever seen, although Gantz is far more vulgar and realistic. Needless to say, i'm looking foward to both.

Er, it's not to do with the dub but with the DVD masters, Madman's release has the 4-4-4-4-4-3-3 episode count Chomolunga mentioned, rather than ADV's (at least for the first half of the series) rather slimmer episode count. So the R2 Gantz will be a 7 disc series.

In fairness the violence isnt as bad as some of the other things, vol 2 will have an 18 rating because of the child abuse scene

What's odd in Elfen Lied was rated 18 (at least some episodes were)in Germany and normally the UK it stricter. Where I'm from it's TV-MA (which is our highest rating, besides porn but that's different) but the fact that it was 18 in Germany is saying ALOT because they gave Interspecies Reviewers a 16 (with only the 3rd episode being 18) in the US it was released by a FRICKEN hentai studio!!! Though to be fair it was rated TV-MA until the very episode that got rated 18 in Germany, then it was re-rated to not rated (with a warning that looks like this) it's our closest equivalent to the BBFC's R-181668746515070.png
