Any good mecha been out recently?

How recent are we talking? :) I'd still consider Code Geass a relatively new release on the Mecha front (at least on region 2)

There seems to have been an ominous lack of mecha shows in recent years; certainly of ones that do not feature 'Gundam' in the title.

I haven't seen it yet, but I've recently been eyeing up the 2007 Pailsen Files version of Votoms. The original was pleasantly unlike either Gundam or Macross, so you might want to give it a try.

If the opening is anything to go by, the CG certainly doesn't look too bad.

Linebarrels of Iron? Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari? Macross F? Aquarion? The remake of Jeeg?

I feel like some of them don't quite fit all of your requirements, but that depends on what you mean by "good", "mecha", and "recent".

Rideback was recent (enough) and good. We did have a bit of a glut recently with Macross F, Code Geass, the Girl Who Lept Through Space all coming out back to back or at the same time so it feels like less is coming out.
Mid you there seems to be less action/ adventure stuff coming out as well.

It could have been easier to recommend stuff if you told us a bit about what you actually do like. Especially as 'I dislike Gundam' and 'I dislike Mecha' will basically sound like the same thing to most :p

I'm actually a bit behind having said that. Only just watching Eureka 7, only went through Macross Frontier a few months back. I loved Macross Frontier actually. I think that show was made for me. That's probably a good sign that everyone else will hate it.

I think Macross F is just a generally really well made show, capable of appealing to people with both fussy and non-fussy (or "standard" and "non-standard" tastes) tastes.

But it is basically High School Musical meets the original series, right? Or was I watching a particularly flamboyant fansub?

Ok, Mecha i like...

Gasaraki,
Full Metal Panic and TSR,
Macross plus (was ok but not a fave)

I like gritty realistic stuff. (Battletech/mechwarrior fan you see)

Code Geass is mecha? I never realised i'll have a look.

That Pailsen Files looks interesting.

Is Gurren Lagann any good? It looked a bit too over the top.

Hmm Macross frontier i'll have a look at that too, i've been a bit out of the loop since having a son.

Both Geass and Gurren Lagann are very silly mecha, but Geass is more a Gundam-esque show than Gurren Lagann which is over-the-top, but its fully intentional and is apart of its appeal. I like Lagann more over the two.

I don't really know what that means.
I'm saying it was FABULOUS, darling.

Yeh Geass is a bit over the top... haha :)

I assume you've seen Patlabor?

Realistic mecha anime seems to be a bit thin on the ground, though I have to admit the level of detail and attention to how things work in the new Gundam Unicorn is astonishing (though I am a Gundam fan boy!)

I think you may enjoy the rest of the franchise that the Palisen files is from Hokum, that being Armoured Troopers VOTOMs, worth looking into from what i've seen of it. Also have you seen Orguss 2 (don't worry you don't need to see the first as the sequel is almost completely disconnected from it) its a really underlooked OVA that Manga released a good number of years ago.

(I understand you said recently but it never hurts to throw some old ones there ;) )

If we are going to mention older shows how about the following

Gunbuster & Diebuster (the series are better than the films)
