Anime on Demand - Good news and bad news

The good news is that Anime on Demand is back up, new servers, new design, new front end.

The bad news is that it's completely behind a paywall. Subscribers only. There's a two week free trial if you want to give it a shot.

While it was affiliated with ANN, the SD content at least streamed for free.

Oh well, back to Crunchyroll.

I like the new design; far better than the old one.

It's a shame that non-subscribers have been locked out now. I'll probably renew my subscription in the new year (It expired in August, but I realised I could still watch in SD for free when the site was still with ANN).

For those who notice Un-Go is missing; AOD have said:
Please note - Un-Go will re-appear on AoD shortly, we're just preparing the finishing touches on it for the new system just now!

Y'know.. I'd have to say Do Not Buy This. The video quality is awful.

Seriously, it's less than 1000kbps on the 720p. Look at the sample video, there's so many artifacts =/

Hopefully the megapixellated episodes have been fixed. From the sample of Maken-ki it looks to be the case.

Actually, since it's now all behind a paywall, shows like R-15 and Maken-ki will be complete rip-offs if they are still white bar censored.

The sample video looks really duff but some of the other samples look fine, so they are clearly capable of better and will hopefully fix it. In terms of the player it's so much better than ANN's that I could cry with joy.

I want to get set up on the 14 day thing and give it a whirl. The actual site seems so much better than the horrible ANN-hosted version that I'm definitely in if the content is ok! The free streams never worked that well for me on the old site anyway so I'm happy to pay them money.

Wait a second...R-15 ISN'T a show all about the crazy adventures of the White Bar?

Why the hell did I watch that show then?!

I've just checked R-15, and it does indeed still have white bar censorship.

I think the reason behind that may be British law, with laws banning "pseudo-photographs" especially of underage pornography, and see as how R-15 is set in a school presumably most of the characters are underage. My guess is that they don't want to run the risk of breaking any such laws and as such are playing it safe.

No, that's the way the Japanese supply the streams, and the way it's broadcast on TV. It's a way of saying, 'if you want to see the echhi, shell out for the DVDs and Blu-rays'.

Oh I see. Well, there goes my theory.

Wait, 'the ****?

No, no, I'm serious here, what the actual Hell, Kaze?!

Paywall AOD and you're done. Simple as.

Also, I do not wish to be assaulted with the opening to [c] which was, with no exception, the WORST show AOD's streamed so far every time I load their Home page.

The HD videos look a better quality to me, when i'm logged in and have HD set to on compared to the sample video which I presume is the homepage video.

Also just a thought, wasn't it originally intended for only 1 episode or so of every show to be free for viewing and one entire show of a series to be free?

Worth remembering there is no regulatory body for the internet in the UK. BBFC for cimena, saleable video media & video game cut scenes and OFCOM for TV. Also worth a note that www.anime-on-demand.com traceroutes to a server in Paris, so would more likely fall under French laws.

I love how Kaze operatives in this "Wait and never see" basis. I seriously love it.

They never did release a statement about the Great French Persona 4 robbery and now they've put up a website that constantly plays the opening to the worst show they streamed in some vapid attempt to get people to watch that show and don't offer free streaming of a whole series, something that crunchyroll (may it's region practices and the fact that it asks for 100% of the subscription fee for 33% of the content die in a ditch filled with sharpened bamboo spikes and sulphuric acid that is also on fire) manages just fine?

Seriously?!

Why in the name of all that is holy does any company whatsoever that tries any attempt at airing anything more complex than Pokémon lose their cognitive **** any time they try?!

They've had less than 24 hours, I'd give them a chance to take polite feedback on board before freaking out and going on a tirade...

I dunno, the structure of your free service, which will be the first basis anyone gets when they access your site for the first time (if they aren't scared away with [c]'s awful opening) and the basic service Crunchyroll provides, is sort of the thing you outline at the start.

That's PR 101.

Course, this is the UK anime industry where it's more likely that they're stuck in PR Primary 1. You're informing people on how to use your service, not writing a serial that is to air 5 nights a week and needs cliffhangers to keep people watching.

And critical response 101 is - You've got to get mad, nothing ever changed because of "Please" and "Thank You" no matter what your folks told you. They're nice words to say, don't get me wrong, but they do not change nothing in this world.
