End of an Era: Manga Entertainment Rebrands to Funimation in the UK and Ireland

Some relevant counter-points to consider: Manga may have dipped a toe in the premium release format market, but it's worth noting that it was never their default approach. That had a really important knock-on effect when it came to most their releases. It made them attainable for a lot of folks...

End of an Era: Manga Entertainment Rebrands to Funimation in the UK and Ireland

As much as I know nothing lasts forever, and it's hardly the end of the world, I'm finding it really hard to process this. What gets me is how many of my cherished memories as a fan of anime Manga are tied into, and how I've taken it for granted. From dashing down to Woolworths to buy my first...

    HdE's big-ish anime sale

Hi folks! This is a bit of a first for me. I'm selling off a stack of old anime, mostly to make room at home and recoup some funds. I've checked over the rules for this sub-forum, and everything I'm about to post here seems in keeping with previous sales threads I've seen. But if anything's...

UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Definitely curious to see how the SD version holds up. I have the old Anime Legends sets of the show on DVD, and they look really soft on a modern flat panel monitor / TV. Which, in itself doesn't bother me. But there were also some very weird QA problems with the old BEEZ releases - a few...

That gave me a good chuckle! Turned out it was enough to break even AND afford a takeaway tonight. I even have change for a Mars bar! (Except, I won't be having a Mars bar. It's not wise to tempt fate. I'm getting old, my duodenum's a bit dodgy, blah blah blah...) Might actually have a...

UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Just got the email about Anime Ltd's Gundam SEED ultimate edition early bird redux (is that what the cool kids call it?) Coincidentally, I just got a MASSIVE bonus payout for some design work I did. So... gonna crunch some numbers and probably place an order. I don't buy these ultra megabucks...

    HdE's Totally Unoriginal Gaming Show

New videogram is up on the YouTube box. In this one, I look at the NES conversion of ARKANOID. And you wouldn't believe the technical hoops I had to jump through to make this happen.

UK Anime Distributor MVM Entertainment Discussion Thread

Not to worry, Neil. Probably worth explaining my position: Career HdE, who has a bit to do with the creation and packaging of fiction, is of the opinion that censoring content that's important to a narrative is a bad idea from a creative / storytelling standpoint. However, I believe the BBFC's...

UK Anime Distributor MVM Entertainment Discussion Thread

Very interesting! Glad to see you're persuing this. Speaking as someone who can see why the BBFC mandated the cut in the first place, I'm also of the opinion that it was overly censorious to the detriment of the story.

    HdE's Totally Unoriginal Gaming Show

New video is up - and I'm going super low tech for this one. So low, in fact that the subject of this latest ramble was coded within a 16K memory constraint! It... uh... looks kind of familiar, doesn't it?

    HdE's Totally Unoriginal Gaming Show

Update time! My latest video's now live on the channel, wherein I looke at QUAKE 4 for the Xbox 360. Really an interesting one, this, as it's the only console port of the game. Which seems kind of strange considering how big a franchise Quake is / was. I wonder why that could have been...

I'd say there's no fun in that at all. Did it seem 'awfully arrogant' to you when I said that people should be free to watch and enjoy what they want to? (Which, by the way, I've made a habit of expressing everywhere online - even here a few times.) FYI, I resent that response quite a bit, Rui...

Only just looked back in on the forum, and this'll probably be my last appearance for a while as life and work look set to go PROPER MENTAL starting tomorrow. But I'll get this off my chest: that cpomment I made before about folks wanting the worst dross imaginable in HD? I'll take a rare step...

    Anime Limited & MVM's 12 Days of Christmas 2020: 1st-12th Dec | 9:30am MVM, 5:00pm AL

Pretty much everything I ordered from AL has arrived now, bar any items from my day 1 order. Which I'm not worried about, as it was a BIG order, and I reckon they're still waiting to pull bits of it together. Overall, I've been impressed at how timely everything has been arriving!

What I'm getting from this is that the Sony UMD version is the one to get, yeah?

Will second this. Between MVM being really timely with my deliveries and AL making sure everything's so securely packaged, I've been really impressed. Truth be told, I went through one of those long periods of anime burn-out you hear about a little while back. It's been an age since I've wanted...

Oof. This is its own thread now? You bought Horizon too? AHAHAHAHAHA! We're terrible anime twinses! Now, the thing is, I do this kind of thing from time to time as well. I've given up on reviewing anime on YouTube now, but I used to hunt down the odd guaranteed stinkeroo on DVD for pennies...

    Format preferences: DVD or BD

That point about DVD quality being variable certainly holds up. I've been surprised on occasion at how well AND how badly certain shows look on DVD. Always seems to come down to how many episodes of a show are crammed onto one disc. But I've also found there are no absolute measures of quality...

    Format preferences: DVD or BD

Sometimes, the media format doesn't even come into it, as far as I'm concerned. I mean, I won't say that I don't notice the difference between HD and SD. And I'll generally try to get hold of something I really want in the best media format possible. But I'm not too precious about it. I often...

Probably worth mentioning here that I'm still picking up DVDs here and there. I also really miss Discotek's DVD releases. It was AWESOME to know I could buy a show we'd almost certainly never get in the UK and it'd work in a region 2 player. There are some shows in particular that I feel...
