The General Conversation Area

I had hailstones up to the size of golf balls last night pummelling my roof and windows, thought they were going to smash them in. It sure was impressive.

The Storm on the south coast and especially where I'am on the Isle of Wight was insane last night!

I really love thunderstorms and I'm in no doubt when I say that last nights storm was the best I've ever seen.

It certainly was the longest one I can remember. Didn't see much fork lightening in Southampton, but plenty of flashes and at one point the thunder must have kept rolling for minutes.

Raiden sure had a busy night.

Not my photos or based where I live but they are from the Isle of Wight. This was pretty much the view out of my window and it was just constant, every 20 seconds or so a flash of lightning like these pictures across the sky and inbetween huge flashes in the distance. It was truly amazing.

^This picture was taken within a minute of where I live. Though luckily for me my window view is much less obstructed.

Since the property market is hideously under-regulated, would there be any harm in simply lying about your source of income? London landlords are no strangers to duplicity themselves...

Unfortunately, the issue starts when I get any advance deposit because to get that, I have to be in receipt of housing benefit and getting that claim in could take several weeks meaning (even though the money is paid to me and not the landlord) that I'd have to find some way of having the property held which I can't do.

I may be a bit late to the party (I've been making use of my freedom of movement while I have it) but anyone else find this totally appaling?

The UK will block online porn from next year. Here's what we know

I hate to say I told you so, but that slippery slope fallacy from the Coroners & Justice Bill... isn't looking so much like a fallacy as we pick up speed, is it? Now we're entering an era in government legislation where the difference (or lack of) between art and pornography could very well lead to entire websites and social media platforms being blocked in the UK because they don't want to jump through a load of bull**** hoops that will cost them more in time and money than UK users generated in revenue.

What is porn? Is hentai and r34 porn? Will I have to put myself on the not-quite sex offender's register to vist Pixiv, tumblr and DeviantArt? I can search Bing Images and get porn, will we have to register with a credit card to use Bing? Goodbye anonymity. I mean I GUESS we'll be able to use proxies or ToR, but doesn't the thought that doing so will put us in the same boat as people from literal totalitaran dictatorships absolutely horrify anyone else?

Hopefully the more libertarian minded Tories will block the government from doing this somehow, I'm not enough of a legal expert to know whether this kind of legislation requires a vote or not, but the very idea an apparent ""freedom loving democracy"" would consider a move like this has me considering a move to just about anywhere else in the world that actually values personal liberty.

The idea of a government full of wankers blocking access to porn amuses me. They'll have to go back to getting off over the tears of the disabled, jobless & poor instead.

I'm now in really hacked off mode since I had an 'interview' with Lidl yesterday at my local jobcentre which from what I was told was just a general conversation about the job and what it implies as I would still have to complete an online application which included an assessment which I went through after I got back home.

I just checked my email today and found out that after that interview my application wasn't going to be processed any further and I'm not even sure if this has any impact on the online application I'd recently made, so I'm just going down the screw you route even though this recent email didn't refer to me by name (which the ones related to the online application did) and moving focus back to finding a place to live

That is still not going well even though I might have a few estate agents helping, and I'm going to have to fudge the facts in order to get around the barn door that will hopefully allow me to apply for housing off the council and others that go through the locata.

I'm pretty much wanting to get out of this complete mess even if that means going into another 9x12 room that had connected cooking facilities and a phone line in the room so I can take my stupidly renewed for two years internet connection with my and isn't too far from a jobcentre.

I love the line "this is a first in a democracy" - in other words saying "we're doing something that's been done in various undemocratic nations who do this sort of thing to stifle dissent and control their citizens' lives and minds" as if that's a good thing.

One must bear in mind that the MP spearheading this trifle does not appear to have any background in IT, so it is likely that he relies on consultants to tell him everything he wishes to hear. (Tories, as we know, expect to get their way as a matter of birthright, and they pay luxurious sums to maintain such arrangements. Who would let honesty endanger a cheque from such a client?) He is probably rather insouciant towards the fact that the grey areas of the internet are, in fact, far greyer than even the people who voted for him...

Part of the blame should fall on organisations like the NSPCC who are spearheaded this so called campaign of "making the internet safe for the children" even though the the parents already have the tools to restrict the child's access to pornography. As if I already didn't have enough reasons to hate kid's now there preventing me from getting my rocks off.

Sobering news, especially the part about the BBFC getting involved. Because they have a fantastic record of not at all overreacting to nonsensical things. I'm already on the voluntary sex offenders list or something because I unlocked my phone for adult sites once in order to read a historical article about sarashi that was randomly blocked, so I'm sure nothing can possibly go wrong with this plan.

As if I already didn't have enough reasons to hate kid's now there preventing me from getting my rocks off.

I remember back in the good old days when you had to wait for a low resolution photo of a woman to gradually load top to bottom.... Especially aggravating when it gradually gets to the waist and that lady doesn't have lady parts o_0.

So as of tomorrow, i will finally have a full on office to work with in my room. Meaning i can work full time on things i couldn't do before on just my laptop. IE Streaming, forum posts(oh hi), etc. Actually would give me the motivation to write again as well, so it's stupidly overdue, i can't wait to actually get it all set up in the evening after work. I genuinely missing have a proper PC and office space, it's exciting to have that back

Dear all,

Hello, I'm doing a bit a research for my dissertation on recent cultural trends /themes (by recent I mean the last 50 years!) and was hoping you guys could help.

People have always enjoyed dressing up over the ages, one way or the other. Could you tell me what you see the difference between 'Dressing up' / 'fancy dress' and your own style - 'Cosplay'? Do you believe you adopting the persona of said character etc?

If can reply, please could you phrase it in a way a small child might understand it? I don't have any experience in this field!

Many thanks,

A

I think I'm officially screwed on the housing front since I'm not going to get any help from the council until I'm homeless, and I've just found out about the benefit cap which is going to limit what I can get in regards to a place to live and since I can't even afford any of the deposits and rent advances I'm pretty much done for and my entire collection is going to be headed for the nearest tip in the next month or so.
