The British Museum, which is based in London, is planning a couple of anime-flavored film seasons that will run from the end of July right the way through until the end of September.

"MANGA TO ANIME FOR FAMILIES" ("a series of Japanese animated films for the whole family") and "LATE NIGHT MANGA TO ANIME FILM SEASON" ("a series of feature films which have put the Japanese animated film industry on the international map") are spotlighting some quite obscure, older classics (They Were Eleven, Phoenix 2772 - Space Firebird) along side some movies as recent as Naruto The Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow. The full schedule is as follows:

  • Naruto The Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (July 2Cool

  • Porco Rosso (August 4)

  • Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind (August 11)

  • Phoenix 2772 - Space Firebird (September 7)

  • Barefoot Gen (September 13)

  • Akira (September 14)

  • They Were Eleven (September 21)

  • Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society (September 2Cool

  • Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (September 29)

Damn, I really wanted to see the Naruto movie... in Japanese! But no.. they have to play the dubbed version with that old woman as Naruto... what a let down.

At least quite a few of the other films are in Japanese, GITS:Innocence and some other Ghibli ones.

Can anyone fill me in on what They Were Eleven is like? I found it's been released R1 by CPM, it's actually in stock on DVD Pacific : O! I'll have to pick this up, always wanted to see a really old anime : ).

Can anyone who's heard the Naruto dub, or somehow heard a part of the movie let me know if it really is too bad to watch?

EDIT: If the dub in the movie really is as terrible as what I heard at the LE last year in the TV series (hurts to think about it : ( ), I'll e-mail this museum and ask them what the chances of showing it in Japanese are. : D

For the love of God, will people stop overrating GITS. At least they're not showing the first film.

I'd love to see the GitS movies on the big screen. I've seen Innocence before at the cinema but it would be great to see it again. Shame it's in London which is just too damn far.

Where did that come from? I don't think anyone here has started bumming Ghost in the Shell. I didn't like the move much anyway, pretty pants and so boring. Stand Alone Complex is much better though.

Agreed.

The movie is good; sure, but if you consider that the best thing to come out of the franchise, then you haven't seen much/understood much of anything else besides it. Confused

The movies have been pretty mediocre anyway, with the exception of SSS, which dominated them.

IMHO, of course. Wink

But she's a Japanese woman; it makes a who~le lot of difference Wink
Japanese woman's voice in anime works.
Fat American woman's voice in anime = nono.

The very fact that other GITS movies are there sugests to me that they'll show the first one in the future.

IMO, The GitS movies seem to get better after watching them a few times. I did like them at first, but love them now. Smile

I will be going along to the Naruto movie this saturday, I think seeing Naruto on the big screen will be an interesting experience. Tickets to Naruto are free, I'm not sure if there are any left, but give the box office a ring to find out more.

Also bought tickets for Akira and GITS: Solid State Society.
