Around about this time of year, Japan's animation industry kicks into overdrive and produces an incomprehensible amount of new TV series. In order to make some sense of it all, we can use this thread to post up screen-caps from the first episodes.

The first series I've had a look at is Claymore. And I enjoyed it, a lot. It's a horror-fantasy set in a brutal medieval era. The Claymore defend the weak humans from the meat eating Yoma (demons). So far it's been a fairly straight forward story, but it's fiendishly moody and atmospheric, while the art is delightfully gothic. I also enjoyed the fairly mature tone of direction, or could it be that the characters designs aren't obviously pandering to otaku.

That animation looks well done, i'm not usually one for series set in the past but i may have to take a look at that.

I just watched Episode 1 of Claymore, gotta agree it looks excellent. Other new shows I recently got the first episodes of, but haven't watched yet are:

Hayate the Combat Butler
Murder Princess
Deltora Quest
Winter Cicada
SF Saiyuuki Starzinger
Touka Gettan
Heroic Age
Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann

Got a lot of watching to do.

well from the one's listed on Nyu's list seen some of Reideen, and looking forward to Darker than Black (it's a Bones production, what can i say I'm a fan). Others that looked like they are worth a watch are
Claymore
El Cazador
Heroic age
Moonlight Mile

I'll probably be watching a fair few series, might drop a few, looking foward to though;

Hayate the Combat Butler
Hitohira
Seto no Hanayome
Touka Gettan
Claymore
Nagasarete Airantou
Darker than Black
sola
Lucky Star
Kaze no Stigma

also the Inukami, Shakugan No Shana and Kiddy Grade movies

Such a let down. When I first heard the title I thought it was going to be an awesome comedy/drama about a butler who was part cyborg or something.

I've actaully read 2 volumes of the manga and i really liked that, so hoping the anime is just as good

Read 3 myself and while fun haven't convinced me to find the anime, struck me as one of those stories were most of the jokes are at the expense of the lead character who constantly gets beaten down physically and emotionally.

Anyway grabbed some screen shots of Heroic age (note pic's in reverse order)

I was quite impressed with "Heroic Age", it's very much an epic planet exploding anime. The main mecha looks a lot like a unit from Evangelion (including organic structure) and it was well animated. It's success though will ultimately depend on whether or not the story can maintain this pace.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann was great too. It's clearly from the team behind FLCL and Abenobashi, sharing that same quick-fire, colourful animation and sense of humor. It feels a lot like a "cartoon" in the traditional style, and is totally stupid, over the top and just plain fun. Really looking forward to seeing more of it. Screen caps below.
