Anime Limited have announced that they will be handling the UK release for Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin!

For all of you Mobile Suit Gundam fans out there we’ve got some exciting news for you relating to the forthcoming Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin project in that we are the UK distributor! What does this mean? Well it’s pretty simple, you’ll be able to pre-order the Blu-ray Collector’s Edition [Export Version] of each part of Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin I: Blue-Eyed Casval direct from our AllTheAnime.com web store prior to its release on 24th April 2015.

The show will be handled as a special 'Export' edition. Each set will contain the original Japanese language (with English subtitles) and the English dub from NYAV Post.

Set 1 contains:

A highly recognized franchise worldwide with its rich 35-year history, “Gundam” continues with the latest anime OVA series “Gundam the Origin” and will be released simultaneously worldwide with Japan on Blu-ray disc and On-Demand Internet streaming. Japanese Blu-ray Disc Collector’s Edition Volume 1 will be released with impressive specs on April 24, 2015 and Internet streaming will begin on February 28, 2015. A little pricey for my tastes, but I'm a big Gundam fan so have got my pre-order in - I'm glad Anime Ltd are sorting out the physical approach as I was worried going via Daisuke's pay-to-stream approach would end up being the only route. Nice to have such a reassuring blog post re. custom charges/language options etc. too.
 
That .. looks delicious.

I've only ever seen Gundam Wing though, is it essential to see other parts of the Gundam franchise before this? It's an origin story so I'm leaning towards not but just want to be sure before a possible order.

I've read the manga this is based on, and I'd say, probably not - you don't need to have seen the other parts. One of the joys of Gundam is that essentially each variation on it is basically a retelling of the core Gundam story - a certain set of key ingredients will always be present in each series, and then they do slightly different things with those ingredients. 70 quid for one episode is a lot to put forward (Nothing meant by that, I understand the reasons) with very little knowledge of Gundam so I appreciate the response. :thumb:
 
This is good news (a better organised version of the Unicorn worldwide simultaneous release). I was about to moan about the price but this is the special store-exclusive edition rather than the regular version, so of course that's why it's so much higher with VAT etc. Ok, I'm in.

I've pre-ordered. The price isn't so bad when you consider it includes shipping from Japan and to clear customs (so no nasty ransom notes from RM/PF). Plus all the bonus material looks very nice indeed.

Since i'm a huge Gundam fan it took me miliseconds to pre-order it, plus it'll look nice with my Gundam: The Origin manga.
 
GNNG! REALLY feeling conflicted over this one.

Its outside my budget, for sure. But a lot makes this appealing. It's a nice package, those are extras I'd actually like to have, and the assurance that there won't be any hidden charges is appreciated.

But, right now, it looks like a pass for me. Potentially, four episodes at £70 a pop... I just can't do it. I get that it's a special arrangement to get the show over here, but neither my wallet or my fanboy inclinations go that far, I'm afraid.

Would be good to get some word on whether a standard release via regular channels is likely in the UK, somewhere down the line. If it's this, VOD or nothing, that'll be poor show.
 
After some reassurance in the other thread. I'm all in I suppose!

Having never watched anything Gundam before (there's a lot of episodes, it's intimidating!), it seems like the beginning is as good a place as any to dive in. It helps that it's a very pretty looking set too... I'm also kinda hoping that if enough interest is shown, we stand a chance of getting some other interesting stuff.

As for price, sure £70 is a lot, but hopefully it'll hold it's value, plus there's only 4, and they're not exactly coming out close to each other. (I'LL JUSTIFY IT SOMEHOW DAMNIT!).
 
Thing is, smaller numbers make things seem more attractive. I'm looking at this as 4 x £70 = £280.

No way can I support that. The package is nice, the extras for this first volume look neat. But I can't get past the fact that I'm getting just four episodes (even if the running time indicates they're movie length) for that amount of money.

A hint was dropped in another thread that a regular home video release may be on the way for next year, though. I'll be waiting on that.
 
They say they'll make 4 now but i bet they'll be more. Unicorn was only meant to be 6 episodes long at the beginning but they made 7 in the end to give it a good finish. The price is steep but seeing as i'll only be paying that only once a year or so it limits the damage on the price.
 
It actually occurs to me that I have no idea what the release schedule for The Origin is!

Are we really looking at one episode per year?
 
I'm just going based on what Unicorn was like. The first few episodes were about 6 months apart and then it went to a year and then just over a year for the final one. So i'm thinking that maybe it'll be about 6 months to a year between episodes.
 
This'll show you how dedicated a fan I am:

I actually gave up on Unicorn completely when Bandai shut up shop stateside. Unfinished muti-volume releases REALLY annoy me - Gundam is literally the only show that can persuade me to snag individual volumes as they appear.

So, where Unicorn was concerned, I actually wasn't paying attention. When I heard RightStuf! had picked up Unicorn for release, I POUNCED on the remaining DVD volumes. The thing is, so much time had passed by then that I'd just sort of shrugged and said to myself 'maybe one day...' and forgotten about it.

(I actually find that some folks I know who were excited about Unicorn and wanted to buy it aren't even aware of the RightStuf! DVDs - which is a damned shame. You can buy the whole lot for less than I've seen a single blu ray volume going on Amazon!)
 
Obligatory remark that the Amazon prices for Unicorn are NOT the cheapest (by a long shot) and anyone who feels they want it on BD would save a fortune by shopping around, for the benefit of anyone lurking.

Still mulling over this one, don't know if I can justify the £280+ outlay for the series when a nice Collectors edition might come out towards the end of next year for under half that price :hmm:

Yeah I think that is a given, but just a question, how much an impact do you think the sales of these kind of Limited Imports will have on your ability to license properties in future?

Say for example the UK doesn't sell many of these sets, would it leave you in a bad situation with regards to future licensing agreements? I dont' want to not support initiatives like this and then have it screw you/us over in the future.

I understand if you can't comment on these sort of things though :)
 
I go on holiday for a few days and see this!

I am a fan of Gundam, just not a huge one, so I'm going to think about it. When a UK release comes out, I will definitely purchase that on Blu-Ray.

I know what will probably happen though, I'll end up buying both. :)

It's a fantastic idea to do this, and I want to support it in hopes of it being successful to do again in the future for other films/series.
