The organisation has set its sights on Sony Computer Entertainment, with confirmation that 5pb and Nitro+'s critically acclaimed visual novel Steins;Gate is finally coming to European shores next year, courtesy of distributor pQube. What's even better is, while JAST USA recently released the original PC version in the United States, the release from pQube will be the recent PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of the science adventure game.

The PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of Steins;Gate are currently set for a 2015 release in Europe and America. Manga Entertainment UK released White Fox's 2011 anime adaptation in the United Kingdom.

Day 1 purchase on PS3 for me. Quite shocked this has actually happened, if this does well it could be a gateway for more console visual novel releases like perhaps... Higurashi?

I wouldn't be surprised if we have the enormous success of Danganronpa to thank for this.

Now, if only someone would translate the Fate/stay Night Visual Novel. That has a Vita port too!

Day 1 Vita purchase for me too. Only seen the 1st episode of the anime, but now I will just play the VN when it comes out :)

Re: Steins;Gate Visual Novel's PS3, Vita Ports Coming To Eur

Kinda surprising to see a VN getting a console release, and a vita too, that's got to be some kind of miracle.

I was already tempted to buy the PC version, now I have more options.

Definitely shocked about this - never thought I'd see the day when a visual novel got a proper Western release on the Vita/PS3 - like others have said, hopefully this opens the door for Fate etc.

I'd suspect Fate is available to licence already, just it's a matter of can enough copies be sold to justify whatever insane licence fee you'd have to pay. Fingers crossed that Steins Gate pulls some good numbers and justifies more VN's being widely released.

Re: Steins;Gate Visual Novel's PS3, Vita Ports Coming To Eur

Definitely - the Danganronpa games seem to have gone down very well in the West too - so it definitely feels like the tide is slowly turning.

Re: Steins;Gate Visual Novel's PS3, Vita Ports Coming To Eur

I'm not that interested in Steins;Gate but since I hadn't realised the second Danganronpa was already out in the west, this topic has been very useful :D

(Speaking of other console VNs with a western release, the Hakuoki series seems to have done rather well too - so this isn't entirely without precedent. It's great to see that companies are responding to demand.)

Yeah, I gave Hakuoki a go and had mixed feelings about it. It's styled very nicely - but the choices you get in it are quite minimal and it's quite dense going if you aren't into BL/Japanese history. I wonder how well it's sold? The price seemed to come down very quickly - I got my copy free with a NEO subscription. I do remember the company that released it having a stall at MCM when it first came out though.

I forgot about the Hakuoki Visual Novel getting a physical PS3 release. Same goes for the BlazBlue prequel XBlaze Code:Embyro.

I fancy that it was a big success in the US since it had a bunch of remakes/spin-offs released (and that nice LE for the physical PS3 edition). I can see how it would be heavy work if you aren't already up on Japanese history, however!

It probably didn't do so well in the UK where it doesn't seem to have been advertised very much. That's a nice bonus for a subscription...

If it gets a physical release for PS3 then I'll buy it. I don't have enough data allowance to download it.

On a separate note, I've nearly bought the Hakuoki game on 3DS several times but never actually taken the plunge because I still remember the anime too well (I watched the MVM DVDs this year), so I'm not sure if there is any point playing the game now. Also not played Danganronpa because I don't have a Vita, and I'm not likely to get one anytime soon considering how my 3DS is sat in a corner gathering dust.

I held off buying a Vita for a long time too - but finally caved this month and it's brilliant; it really is the best platform for Japanese games - there's a whole heap of stuff that hasn't even got a physical release that's available on the store - like the Sword Art Online game plus Vita ports of all the Atelier games.

The Hakuouki anime only tells one (slightly jumbled) route from the game, so there are still a bunch of alternate stories delving deeper into the other characters - all of whom are better than Hijikata anyway*. Since the story of the Shinsengumi is so famous in Japan already, you could argue that most people who play will already know about the (non-supernatural) plot twists before they begin as well. There's probably a certain mindset people like me have where we enjoy watching the same historical events unfolding over and over in slightly different ways.

I'd also like to second the Vita praise above! I finally bought one to go with my Vita TV since the US edition of Danganronpa wasn't compatible with the Vita TV for some reason. It's a lovely piece of kit. The Vita TV is fabulous too when you aren't being screwed over by random games which don't work.

* Personal opinion, I know.

I've always noticed how most of the japanese games that get western releases end up on the Vita. I had a quick look through the range of Vita games on Amazon and I'm beginning to see the merits of buying one. In fact it might be worth it just so I can finally try one of those legendary Persona games.

Noted. It's the historical setting that is most of interest to me in Hakuouki so that's a big plus. The characters are secondary for me as I'm not part of the target market (if you know what I mean). It would also give my 3DS a purpose in life.

Vita TV? Such a thing exists? What a good idea.
I take it the Vita is region free if you were playing US games, which is a big positive.

Interesting quote from PQube:

I also asked Evans if the game would be released via retail channels or as a digital release. He replied, “I’m personally against digital-only releases, so I will do my very best to ensure a physical release happens. I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection.”
