Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival 2017 Programme Details Revealed

The Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival is the biggest Japanese animation event in Wales and it returns this September with some of the best in anime with many feature films and shorts plus many different events and special guests. The programme was recently revealed and it has a lot to offer.

The festival begins in Cardiff at Chapter Arts Centre on Friday, September 29th and it runs for three days full of films and events before moving to Aberystwyth for a one day event at the Aberystywth Arts Centre on October 28th.


Events kick off with an opening ceremony and a screening of The Night is Short, Walk on Girl, the latest film from Masaaki Yuasa (Tatami Galaxy, Lu Over the Wall). The festival then carries on over the weekend as the rest of the programme is screened in the venues cinemas with Napping Princess, Your Name, Genocidal Organ, Belladonna of Sadness, A Silent Voice, Pigtails, and other short films from Production I.G, before finishing with Mind Game, another film by Masaaki Yuasa, all being shown. Aberystwyth has a smaller line-up that consists of Napping Princess, Genocidal Organ, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale, and Mind Game.

There is more than films on offer during the festival run at Chapter Arts where a range of special events will take place across the weekend including a Manga Drawing Workshop at 13:30 on Saturday with manga artist Asuka Bochanska Tanaka, the Neo Craft Animation – A Certain Japanese Stop-motion Animation masterclass with Professor Yuichi Ito, an award-winning animator who also lectures at the Tokyo National University of Arts Graduate School, and a Japanese calligraphy workshop at 15:00 on Sunday 1st October.

There are other sights to see such as the Japanese Marketplace where goods such as manga, kimono, food, and video games from Japan and the UK will be on sale from various sellers. The Kotatsu Festival Stand returns with a selection of new and second-hand Japanese books, comics, magazines and DVDs, and other items and there will be a Kotatsu Display with an actual Kotatsu table for festival attendees to try out (Saturday only).

To top it all off, there is a raffle at both venues where people can win a variety of goods from Japan and the UK.
